Can Phobias Really Be Cured in 5 Minutes With Advanced NLP?

Living with a phobia can seem restricting and scary for many people. It can control you and make you feel helpless in a particular situation. Through therapy and behavior modification, it is possible to work through phobias and eventually overcome them. However, this takes an extended period of time, and many people are looking for faster ways to cure themselves. NLP, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, has been described as the “owner’s manual” for the brain, featuring a range of mental techniques to deal with thoughts and emotions. An amazing link between NLP and phobias is being studied and used successfully to cure people faster than any previous form of therapy.

Phobias

Everyone has fears to a certain degree. The main difference between a fear and a phobia is that a phobia must contain a level of irrationality. It is technically an anxiety disorder and can produce the same symptoms and effects as a panic attack. In general, phobias do not make sense to the people who have them. They affect various lifestyles and can be severely damaging. This is a testament to the power of the brain and how essential its good health is to living.

The dangers of phobias are quite serious. After panic and fear set in, they are accompanied by an increased heart rate, trembling, shortness of breath, and an overwhelming desire to get away from whatever is causing the phobia. Many common phobias are easily avoidable, but some can literally paralyze people. For example, agoraphobia is a fear of public places, and social phobia is a fear of social situations. In these cases, a person is basically trapped inside of their home with no human interaction.

People may view phobias and fears as the same, but they are very different. As demonstrated above, a phobia can be debilitating, and makes a person lose the ability to rationalize clearly. Common phobias include a fear of heights, enclosed spaces, pain, or spiders. In any phobia, there is a set of warning signals that lead to anxiety. The signals are usually a response to an external event.

Again, the key to understanding phobias is that they are manufactured in the brain. This is also the route to curing them. Because the brain is like a computer, it is possible to “reprogram” it according to a person’s life. Psychotherapy focuses on this, but to get there even faster, NLP is helpful in gaining more control over the brain and using its power to improve lives.

NLP

NLP is not a new discovery, having been studied for over 30 years. The name itself can be broken down to accurately explain the effectiveness of the techniques. “N” stands for Neuro, a reference to how the mind and body interact. Using language to determine a person’s thinking is called, Linguistics (“L”). And the Programming (“P”) relates to the study of behavioral patterns and thought processes. Combining all 3 elements creates a powerful set of techniques to work through emotional issues, including fear. This is the relevance of NLP and phobias.

Hypnotherapy

Since a lot of phobias originate from past events, the best place to start in treating them is to locate the source. A traumatic or memorable experience is often replayed inside of our minds like a scene from a movie. Whenever we encounter a similar circumstance, it triggers the unpleasant feelings associated with that event. This is what gives phobias power; the use of negative memories to prevent their reoccurrence. For this reason, phobias may be considered to be a type of scare tactic. But in actuality, they are the brain’s way of protecting you from experiencing something that has scarred your psyche before.

Hypnotherapy is a fast way to remove a person from their phobias and change the way they respond to them. NLP uses hypnotherapy to revisit a patient’s memory with the visual/kinesthetic dissociation technique. If your phobia is being caused by a previous event, you might be asked to imagine that you are watching the event on a screen, distancing you from the memory itself. In addition, the “movie” is visualized in black and white. As you “watch it”, you are not personally involved, so it allows your brain to objectively analyze what is happening.

Staying with the movie screen example, you would be instructed to walk over to the screen, step inside of it, and change the picture to color. Then, the memory is replayed backwards, starting with the ending. A musical arrangement is played along with it, almost as if it were a comedy, changing the perception of the event entirely. Turning an anxiety-filled memory into a non-threatening one is the essence of hypnotherapy and NLP.

Dissociation

NLP is used to cure phobias because it allows a person to disassociate from the cause of that phobia. Taking it even further, the patient will even visualize themselves watching the memory of a traumatic event unfold. In other words, you would be looking at yourself sitting down watching a movie. Then, a gradual involvement on both levels takes place, reconfiguring the way your brain views that “movie”, or event. Once it seems like something that is no longer affecting you, the fear subsides. Surprisingly, the phobia disappears automatically in many cases. The technique only requires minutes and can be used for a variety of fears and phobias.

NLP Warning

Although NLP is highly successful in removing phobias from a person’s brain, it is important to note that these techniques should only be used in the company of a licensed practitioner. An NLP expert knows exactly how to guide the patient through phobias safely. If they are tried without an expert present, more damage can be done to the brain, causing an even worse response to the memory being studied.

The basic principle of NLP is to re-examine the way our minds process a certain thought pattern or life in general. Helping you change that process gives you more confidence in dealing with new events. Scientists often state that only the surface has been scratched in understanding the brain and its capacity to learn. It is becoming more apparent that if a problem begins in the mind, the solution exists there as well.
